“Many people sacrificed so much for the herb over the years who got locked up”
Damian Marley may be the youngest of his father’s eleven children, but the symbolism of his latest venture does not escape him. In conjunction with Ocean Grown Extracts, Marley will be converting a former California State prison into a 77,000 square foot medical marijuana farm. The Coalinga, CA prison was bought by Marley and his partners for $4.1 million, and as Billboard notes, the purchase was an immediate success, wiping out the host town’s debt of $3.3 million and adding 100 jobs to a local economy plagued by drought while also adding roughly $1 million in new tax revenue for the struggling CA town.
Marley’s first crop is due to be harvested by January with oil extracts arriving within the next 60 days. He also has his own proprietary strain of OG Kush called “Speak Life,” genetically altered by a real-life weed scientist (dream job, anyone?) But even that’s not all, as Marley gears up to release his fourth studio album, which shares a name with his new strain and is slated for release right around the same time as his first crop is due at the top of the new year. And with California’s legal recreational marijuana bill, Proposition 64, expected to make major waves this election season, the fruits of this new venture could prove to be even more plentiful than originally expected.
