Top Dawg Entertainment – or TDE – had one of its most productive years to date, and they’re closing out 2016 with its third annual holiday concert and toy giveaway.
TDE will host the free public event on Tuesday, Dec. 20 from noon until 4 p.m. PST at Nickerson Garden Projects in Watts, Calif. The label’s roster of artists will perform, and families in need will receive toy donations.
The annual tradition began in 2014, when Jay Rock and company CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith decided to give their communities a more enjoyable holiday season than they had as children.
“In cities like Watts, Compton and South Central, a lot of these kids don’t get to leave their neighborhoods,” TDE President Dave Free told MTV in 2015. “They don’t get to go to these shows. They don’t have the resources, money or opportunities to be in these environments, to be submerged in music, culture and different elements. To me, that’s an important thing. That’s what I see in all these families, in their faces, that excitement.”
TDE’s General Manager, Robert “retOne” Reyes, added that it has particular significance to the neighborhood that the event is being thrown in.
“Nickerson is notorious for being one of the most dangerous places. Granted, it can be, but there’s also good that goes on there,” Reyes said. “It doesn’t always have to be a plight and the most important thing is bringing that to the light…You don’t have to be afraid of the inner city. There’s a lot of great things that come from that. We’re just trying to showcase it.”
Tuesday’s celebration comes after the label had one of its most productive years to date. They released new projects by Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad and new signee Lance Skiiiwalker, with Kendrick and Schoolboy both earning Grammy nominations.
