Watch Erykah Badu Perform “On & On” at Her First Brooklyn Open Mic in 1995

“I guess you just gotta take that first leap…huh? One night I did.”

Hard to imagine that Erykah Badu‘s seminal debut, Baduizm, is now celebrating its 20th lap round the sun, countless more on the collective clock. Groundbreaking and influential beyond measure, Baduizm, was immediately embraced by critics and pedestrians alike, marking the first wave of Soulquarian output that would eventually lead to an Electric Lady Land takeover and equally-cherished releases from The Roots, D’Angelo, Common, Bilal and J Dilla.

Today, the singer has shared a video of her first performance of the album’s lead-off single (now a classic cut bordering on mantra-like universality) “On & On” at an open mic event in Brooklyn. You can watch that below. Last year, Baduizm was released on vinyl in its entirety (including the previously omitted interludes and “Other Side of The Game”) for the first time ever.
