In 2014, ONYX released their first album in 11 years. While the LP, which was produced by the Snowgoons, maintained the hardscrabble Rap style that is core to ONYX, the substance of their raucous rhymes was different. Rather than slamming and taking out their competitors, Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz took note of the tumultuous times they were in and called for people to Wakedafucup, both with the title of the album and many of its themes.
Now, the duo is preparing to release a reloaded version of that album, and they have teamed with Chris Rivers on a potent remix. “Dirty Cops,” finds the three MCs talking about one of the lightning rod issues of the last several years: corrupt police officers. When ONYX first released the song, it was several months before the August 2014 death of Michael Brown at the hands of a police officer. Since then, there have been a string of unresolved killings of people of color by police officers, making the song’s words even more salient.
