In the last year and change, Bellflower, California MC A-F-R-O (All Flows Reach Out) has released a mixtape, he’s stolen the show in more than a few videos, and he even had a significant role in VH1’s film-turned-series The Breaks. On July 8, the R.A. The Rugged Man protege will release a free EP, produced entirely by Marco Polo (Boot Camp Clik, Pharoahe Monch, Rakim).
Today (June 14) when A-F-R-O and Marco gave up the goods on “Long Time Coming.” The first single from the upcoming Duck Down Music-backed EP finds A-F-R-O going literally off the rails with the liquid linguistics. Fans of R.A., Kool G Rap, and Big Pun look no further as this MC takes technically advanced rhyming to its motherland. Moreover, the song is not short on substance either. In a week where gun violence played a key role in one of the largest tragedies in US history, this record joins Monch’s “When The Gun Draws” as a another chilly (and advanced-lyrical) reminder to the perils out there. Never preachy, A-F-R-O keeps the song dynamic with animated deliveries and a syncopated flow that is hard to top.
Marco’s deft digging for piano minor chords, hard drums, and distorted vocals give the song the complement. Shylow cuts up some C.L. Smooth, and builds a strong scratch chorus.
